It has now been 12 weeks since I signed up and I still have not received any seeds (see earlier post below). Have any seeds been shipped to me at all? I would like to participate in this study, but at this point, it appears that I'm not needed.
I planted 1/2 of my seed packet 3 weeks ago in what I consider an ideal spot and haven't had any sprouting. I am soaking the remaining seeds in water for 24 hours and will try again.
I received one packet of seeds today; and will take it over and plant it with the rest in the sunflower fort where ever I see a bare spot. I planted with bannana skins because the ground was so sandy..They make great fertilizers the skins! I did get 100 urban bird kits with seeds..were these counted as my seeds or was that a seperate project? (I saw the urban bird kits listed on the observation page) I gave those away to girl scouts, local library garden, and at Earth day for persons to plant with the urban birds kits. I handed out printouts seperately of the Great Sunflower project from photocopies I made.
The children that helped me are eagerly awaiting for their sunflowers to come up. I bought several packets from the dollar store and Walmart and a box of mixed sunflowers., plus two of the sunflowers from the urban bird kits. A few were wanting the bird kits but didn't care for the sunflowers because they had bird feeders and they come up in the lawn. So I put those into the Sunflower fort garden.
If the seeds arrive now; I will offer them at the plantcycle event at the park where the fort is and tell others about the project and to plant seeds.. Hope they will send in a donation. Cher
We've had a number of letters come back in the mail - either some error in the address or in some cases, just postal service weirdness. We're going through these letters and emailing the people who they were supposed to go to so that we can check addresses and re-send them. I'll try to get letters in the mail to everyone who has posted here tomorrow. The quickest route to letting us know you haven't gotten seeds is to email sfbee@sfsu.edu.
we are in ontario canada and have not received our seeds either. we have a daycare and were/are looking forward to sharing this project with our children. can somebody pls tell us whether seeds are still coming or should we go on to another project?

Hi, We never received any seeds. We live in El Cerrito, CA, not far from SF. I went to Annie's Annuals in Richmond, CA and purchased the native sunflowers (I located them with the Latin name used on this site -- they can be found in the "Natives" section). I would still like my seeds if they are coming.
The sunflowers I purchased seem to be thriving. BTW, Annie's Annuals is an AMAZING place to visit if you happen to be in or near Richmond CA -- huge lots with native flowers/plants; lots of bees & butterflies flying around; lots of amazing annuals and some perennials. They have all kinds of flowers, including the sunflowers needed for this project.

I guess we should add our comment here that we have not gotten any seeds yet. Looks like this is a general happening. Is it to late to plant here in MO? Maybe we won't get any seeds this year. No matter we haven't seen any bees either.

Well, I waited and waited and still no seeds. Now most of my garden is planted and I have bare spots for the seeds that never came. Bees will have to make due with what they got.
I have my seeds, and have started some. Only one is growing at this point. I have not started any more because of our abysmal spring weather. It's almost mid-May and night time temperatures are still in the 30s. My garden was covered with 6 inches of snow in April. Very unusual for the Pacific Northwest. I probably will not have any flowers by the target date. Everything is blooming way behind schedule. I also have poor germination issues. I noticed that the seed packet said to plant the seeds one inch deep, but these seeds are too small for that depth. That might be part of the problem with germination, although I planted my seeds at one quarter inch, and still had only one germinate. I will sow the others on the surface and keep extra warm and see what happens.
Not Pony Express. American Meadows sent us a batch of bad seed. Unfortunately, we didn't catch it before sending out a couple thousand packets. However, once we did, we asked them to fill our packets with different seed. We just got the new seed last Monday (5/5) and all the remaining packets were sent out on Thursday and Friday.
I planted the seeds about two weeks ago...and haven't had any germinate yet. Is it possible to get more or do they take a little longer than expected to germinate?
Aargh. One of the batches of seeds that American Meadows has had an abysmally poor germination rate. I only got seven plants from the 10 seeds that I planted. Would you send an email to sfbee@sfsu.edu and let us know where you'd like us to mail you some new ones? We'll get them out on Monday. I'm hoping this new batch of seeds is much better!
We had a delay because we got a bad bunch of seed from American Meadows. They got us new, hopefully higher quality seed on Monday 5/5 and we shipped all our seed out on Thursday and Friday. Apologies.
Still no seeds. I registered the day the article appeared in The Chronicle. Should I buy other seeds? I forget what kind of sunflower it was supposed to be.
