I planted my pkt of seed as soon as they arrived, in maybe June, and not a one germinated. I even watered daily for a little over a week, and still nothing. I would like to try again in 2009.

I planted 4 packets of seeds around the front yard, and the only ones to germinate were the mammoths. I had two volunteers (that I did not plant) that totally outperformed the ones I planted. I feel really bad that I was not able to contribute to the study. Why is it important that we only count bees on one species of sunflower? Thanks, Sally
None of the sunflower seeds germinated at all. I'm not sure if I'll sign up for next year. Did these seeds come from a pack of roasted sunflower seeds?
The rest of the garden grew zucchini, tomatoes, lettuce and jalapeños are currently starting to grow. That tells me I at least have decent soil. I just don't have any sunflowers to report bee activity. I have seen plenty of bees visiting the flowers of the rest of my garden.
I received my seeds fairly late (late June/early July), gave them a good soak before planting, planted in a flat before transplant, and watered regularly. Some of the seeds germinated, but I believe it was too late in the season here for them to succeed. The most successful only attained 12 - 15" and were mercilessly nibbled, probably a slug fest. I planted other sun flowers earlier and they had success. Only about 1% of those survived to adulthood due to non-beneficial insects, birds, and my dog that loves to eat the small heads. I have been here 22 years (Marin county, CA) and have witnessed a huge decline in honeybees, so much so, that I hand pollenate fruit and squash often. However, I have noted a larger variety of other pollenators than before. I hope to have better luck next year for the bee count. Perhaps we should provide our own seed (of the exact variety in the study), to plant at the right time for our area if supplies are delayed again.

My garden was a complete success all around this year except for the sunflowers.
Unfortunately NONE of them germinated and I even started them in a greenhouse.
Very dissapointing.
I planted the Sunflower seeds as soon as I received them,
but no seedlings came up.
I guess I have the ones that will produce next year.
I have other flowering plants that bees are collecting pollen from and
there are quite a few varieties (of bees) here in NC this year!
They seem to love the white clovers on my lawn and I hate when I have
to mow it because it clips off of the clover buds.
This site is very interesting and I keep coming back to read posts
and get new information on the dwindling bee population.

My daughter in Saint Louis had no seeds germinate ;she recived her package of seeds at the end of May. She took 10 of her seeds and placed them on wet towels to test for seed germenation rate She had no seeds to germinate in that test.
I recieved 38 sunflower seeds at the end of May also.I live in Sun Prairie Wisconsin.I believed none of my seeds germinated.When I weeded this week I found what appears to be a sunflower plant differnt from my regular sunflowers .I believe the germination rate of the sunflower seeds we recieved was just very low.
I ordered some sunflower seeds from easywildflowers, sowed them 6 days ago in this high heat and humidity and 3 of 36 are sprouting already. I agree on the poor germination rate on the sent seeds, mine arrived in late May, as they were treated the same, about 40 seeds, and I had no germination from them.

Our sunflower seeds still have not germinated---It's hot here in Atlanta.-we are pampering our seeds though.
