Where are the Bees?

Coming Soon!

Over the next month, we will be building a map here that has dots for participants. In an ideal world, the color of the dot would change ( something like red if >30 minutes, orange if >15, yellow if >10, light green if>5 and dark green if 0-5 minutes) depending on the data that they've entered. This will let you see how your garden compares to all the others around you!

Bees

In Indian Head, MD the honeybee practically disappeared about two years ago, however, I have noticed a resurgence and about 20 to 30 bees are coming to the clover blooms in my yard. While the bumblebee did not disappear, they too are joining the honeybees in my yard clover blooms. As soon as I plant my sunflowers, I will be able to give you an accurate count

Bees in Frederick, MD

Perhaps we're lucky in Frederick. I can't count the bees in my garden during the summer. They're all over the Buddleia and Caryopteris, Purple coneflowers and more. One thing I have noticed in the past two years, however, is that regular honeybees seem to be more prolifici in my garden. I've always had bumblebee, but honeybees have come back. I found out about this effort too late to participate in 2008, but I will certainly enjoy participating in 2009 if the funding comes through! When my holly trees blossom (for some reason, not every year??) they bees (honey and bumble) are attracted to it enough that you can HEAR them well before you get close to the trees. One tree, and I don't know the variety) is about 30' tall and gets covered with pink blossoms in the spring. For the week or so that happens, the bees are so loud there that you can hear them from my bedroom when the window's open.

Bees in St. Louis, MO

Even in the heat of July, the honeybees and bumblebees are buzzing around the anise hyssop, their legs heavy with pollen. What a beautiful sight!

Delaware Bees

I just became aware of this project- how wonderful!

While I didn't do the study, I do have about 7 sunflowers, 2-3 in full bloom right now and the rest just about ready in the next 1-2 weeks.

I don't know how many there should be, but it seems like many bees. I would say there are about 5 bees at any one time on the sunflower at a time with about 10 more within sight not on the flower. This is in addition to the same amount across the yard on the echinacea. We also have a large mount of very very small bees on the allysum in our front window boxes.

I hope this helps!

Central NY Bees

I have only seen several bees since the warm weather came in the beginning of June 2008. Yesterday I saw only 2 bees in the front flowerbed and 1 didn't look well at all. I didn't seem to be able to fly, almost like it was drunk... :( I have jooined the poject in hopes to help to solve the Bees problems.

Pennsylvania Bees

After having two colonies removed from our farm house near Polk two years ago a new colony has decided that the old house looks like a dandy place to set up house keeping. We hate to risk loosing them by moving them out but they just can't live in the same house with my mother. My brother foundd the old super in the barn and is hoping to have them moved out in the next couple of weeks. That should give them plenty of time to be in good order before winter. Every where else they seem to be pretty scarce. Still waiting for my sunflowers to sprout.

Missouri Bees

I have purchased my second and third hive of bees this year, after losing my first hives to the weather.
Last year we had a cold spell, then it warmed up. This caused the bees in my hive to spread out and they didn't make it back together before a cold spell hit them again.
My two new hives are very active this year. Working everyday except when it is raining, which it has been doing this a lot. I use these bees to care for my fruit trees and garden.
I got a report of the first wild swarm in my area yesterday, May 31, 2008. I went to see this swarm but they had left before I arrived.

Mexico

I just returned from a trip to Yelapa, Mexico (south of Puerto Vallarta). Unfortunately, I saw MANY dead bees there. Fortunately, where I live, Ramona, Ca, I've seen many happy bees buzzing about!

West Central Florida

I think this is such a great idea. My husband works outdoors and has been saying for years that he has noticed a decline in the bee population. We already have some sunflowers in bloom (but have not seen any bees) and I am looking forward to recording our data. Hopefully we will all help to make a difference.

Denver

This is such a great idea. I have heard about the declining bee population, and always wondered how it affected my area. I noticed an abbundance of bees in my garden last year, a contrary to other places. I am excited to share my results with everyone as the season progresses. Thanks a lot.

Bees

I live in Buffalo, New York

We have had some of the bees.
But right now, I have a feeling they won't be staying to long.
Haveing construction work on house going on.

Oklahoma - lots of bees

Our crab apples are alive with thousands of busy bees! The sound is loud and beautiful.

Bee Sworm

Riding my bike yesterday at the San Pablo National Seashore right by Sears Point Raceway on HWY 37. Less than half mile out the trail was a massive bee sworm of honey bees. If an individual had an empty hive they're probably still there although dimishing and handable. I moved in close for a picture with my cellphone but it doesn't seem to have come out. I hate to think of those guys dying out there due to a lack of available hive, but ......
